Profile

Sophie Lomax is a fine jewellery designer who is in her final year of a Jewellery Design for Industry degree at the prestigious School of Jewellery, Birmingham.

Sophie grew up in Oxfordshire, with the historic city of Oxford influencing her love of art and architecture from a young age. Sophie attended Headington School, Oxford, with an art scholarship and it was at Headington that Sophie also discovered her love of travelling, with trips to Paris, South of France,  Amsterdam, Venice and Romania.

Sophie’s passion for jewellery started at a young age when she made friendship bracelets and sold them at school fêtes for charity. She soon moved onto beaded and silver wire jewellery while she was at Headington where she began to take commissions which funded her travelling. It wasn’t until Sophie was in her first year of a History of Art degree at the University of Birmingham that she discovered the School of Jewellery. Keen to supplement her few hours of study in History of art, and missing the practical side of her Art A Level, Sophie had began to see what art classes she could take, but found out about the Jewellery and Silversmithing HND. After deciding to finish her first year of History of Art, Sophie began at the School of Jewellery in September 2009, and the rest, they say, is history!

Sophie’s unique designs are very much influenced by her travels and the art and architecture she encounters on the way. As a designer, Sophie’s knowledge from being fully bench trained, is invaluable as she is able to design pieces that she knows can be successfully made. Her computer aided design (CAD) knowledge, both in 2D and 3D packages, has benefited her drawn designs as she has been able to accomplish designs she would not have been able to achieve without the knowledge of what programmes, such as Illustrator and Rhino, can offer.
